Affiliate schemes- can you make money from the internet this way?

A colleague of mine, Emma, has started writing about certain affiliate schemes available online. Do you think that it's possible to make easy money with such an approach? Most of the schemes out there seem to be run for their own sake, rather than as a means of promoting a valuable product or service. A lot of the schemes I've encountered seem to exist to promote themselves, which has a pyramidal aspect that I don't think is that beneficial. I've signed up to one, just to see what material is sent through the system to me. If it is junk, I'll unsubscribe and disregard the e-mails. anyway, take a look at Emma's blog to see what all the fuss is about.
